90% of the Public Cloud Runs on Linux

The Linux Foundation has released its 2017 Linux Kernel Development report. It claims that 90 percent of public cloud computing services, 82 percent of smartphones, 62 percent of embedded systems and 99 percent of supercomputers run on Linux.

Last year, 4,300 developers from more than 500 companies contributed to the kernel. Top contributors included Intel, Red Hat, Linaro, IBM, Samsung, SUSE, Google, AMD, Renesas, and Mellanox. Microsoft, which had previously made the list, did not contribute enough code to be ranked as a top contributor, but is still participating in Linux development.

The report noted, “The Linux kernel is one of the largest and most successful open-source projects that has ever come about. The huge rate of change and number of individual contributors show that it has a vibrant and active community, constantly causing the evolution of the kernel in response to number of different environments it is used in.”
