Over the weekend, The New York Times published a lengthy article on efforts to build artificial intelligence (AI) systems that can build other AI systems, a trend called meta-learning. For example, Google’s AutoML is a machine learning algorithm that excels at building other machine learning algorithms. Microsoft and Facebook also have similar efforts underway. “We are following the same path that computer science has followed with every new type of technology,” said Joseph Sirosh, a vice president at Microsoft. “We are eliminating a lot of the heavy lifting.”

By some estimates, there are only around 10,000 AI experts in the world. With demand skyrocketing for AI developers and data scientists, AI systems might be able to replace some AI experts.
