On Monday, Apple kicked off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a host of announcements. For the mobile development industry, the biggest news was the introduction of the iOS 6 mobile operating system. Currently in beta, the new OS includes a host of new capabilities, including the following:

  • Tighter integration with Facebook
  • Siri can launch apps and work with third-party services
  • Improved navigation from a new 3D map app
  • FaceTime calls over cell networks
  • Phone numbers integrated with Apple ID
  • Improved phone and email controls
  • Passbook for tickets and passes
  • New features for the Safari browser
