What’s Coming Next for Jakarta EE and GlassFish?

The Eclipse Foundation has unveiled some details of its roadmap for Jakarta EE, formerly known as Java EE. The open source group will release two new updates to GlassFish, the reference implementation of Java EE/Jakarta EE. Eclipse GlassFish 5.1 will arrive in the third quarter and will support Java EE 8. GlassFish 5.2 will debut in the fourth quarter with support for Jakarta EE 8.

Overall, Jakarta EE will focus on supporting cloud-native development with new features like enhanced microservices support and better integration with Docker and Kubernetes. The foundation also plans to take a more open and vendor-neutral approach to development of the open source project, eliminating Oracle’s requirement that developers sign an Oracle Contributor Agreement.
