What Was It Like to Build the First iPhone Apps?

Few current or former Apple employees talk with the media. However, Francisco Tolmasky, the developer largely responsible for the first version of the mobile Safari browser for the iPhone, has given an interview to The New York Times that discusses his experiences at the company. Here are a couple of noteworthy bits:

  • About working with Steve Jobs: “Steve was really adamant, where he said, ‘This needs to be like magic. Go back, this isn’t magical enough!’ I remember being very frustrated. This was, like, an impossible task.”
  • About the team responsible for the original iPhone apps: “Each one of these things [the apps] is basically one person.”
  • What happened when Steve Jobs hired a developer who was also named Steve: “At some point Steve Jobs got really frustrated with this and said ‘Guess what, you’re Margaret from now on.'”
