Computers scientists from Vicarious AI have announced that they have created an artificial intelligence system that thinks like a human. The system, developed over decades, solves Captcha tests correctly 90 percent of the time. Captcha, short for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, uses visual images to distinguish between people and machines.

While other developers have created systems that could defeat Captcha by using various “tricks,” the Vicarious solution is much broader, says company co-founder D. Scott Phoenix. “Past solutions may have solved a Captcha at a particular point in time, whereas this solution solves Captcha,” he explained. “Past solutions were hacks that were not part of a general vision system, whereas we’re trying to build an intelligent machine, and it happens to solve Captcha along the way.”
