Ubuntu Phone Goes on Sale Next Week

Canonical has been promoting the Ubuntu Linux distribution for mobile devices for quite some time, and now a Ubuntu-based smartphone is about to go on sale. Before mobile development firms get too excited about creating apps for this new platform, however, they should be aware that the release is very limited.

For now the only Ubuntu smartphone is a version of the Aquaris E4.5 made by Spanish firm BQ. It offers a 1.3 MHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8 GB storage, an 8 megapixel back camera and a 4 megapixel front camera—all of which makes it pretty average these days. And the device will only be available through flash sales in Sweden, Spain, Portugal and the U.K.
