Twitter has decided to get rid of MySQL and replace it with the open source Cassandra data management system.
Charles Babcock at InformationWeek has the story.
Babcock reported today that Twitter isn’t the only social networking service to drop MySQL for Cassandra. Facebook and Digg used to run MySQL but now Cassandra is data management system du joir.
“Cassandra can be run on large server clusters,” Babcock said, “and is capable of taking in very large amounts of data at a time, performing sorts and calling up relevant data quickly. It’s an example of the new types of data handling systems that are powering large Web applications, particularly social networking sites which deal with hundreds of thousands or millions of users.”
Cassandra came from Facebook, but it’s now an Apache Software Foundation project.
