Tiobe has released its December 2011 programming language index, and once again, Java sits at the top of the chart. C and C++ also maintained their positions at number two and three, but Tiobe predicts that C# seems likely to overtake C++ soon. The two languages were neck and neck in popularity, with C++ accounting for 8.252 percent of code written and C# getting 8.205 percent.

“If you look at the current trends, C# will surpass C++ in the next couple of months,” said Tiobe managing director Paul Jansen. “But there might be a chance that C++ is strong enough to stay atop of C# because it is better [suited] for mobile application development.”

This month was also the first time that Groovy made the list of the top 50 languages, and the first time that Clojure made the top 100.
