On June 1, the Government of Malta issued a directive to encourage the use of open source software within the government.
The new policy “covers the procurement of open source software and adoption of related open source business models throughout the public sector to facilitate re-use of government procured software.”
The software adopted must be free software, as defined by the Free Software Foundation, and it must be in English and one other European language.
The Republic of Malta, not to be confused with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, is an archipelago located in the Mediterranean. It’s one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in Europe.
