BlackBerry has announced that it will stop manufacturing smartphones. “The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners,” said CEO John Chen.

Once dominant in the mobile industry, the company has struggled to compete with iPhones and Android devices in recent years. In the future, the company plans to focus on its software development business.

For mobile development firms with apps that run on the BlackBerry operating system, the announcement means that the market for their wares will dwindle until it fades away as current BlackBerry users replace their phones.
