Tech Luminaries Call for Ban on AI Weapons

As artificial intelligence (AI) research advances, many in the developer community are becoming concerned about the possibility of AI-equipped weapons. A group of luminaries, including Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Noam Chomsky and Steve Wozniak have signed a letter that calls on the nations of the world to pledge not to develop AI weapon systems.

The letter, which will be presented at the International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence, says, “The key question for humanity today is whether to start a global AI arms race or to prevent it from starting. If any major military power pushes ahead with AI weapon development, a global arms race is virtually inevitable, and the endpoint of this technological trajectory is obvious: autonomous weapons will become the Kalashnikovs of tomorrow.”
