Mobile development firms with plans to create apps specifically for tablets might want to rethink those plans. According to IDC, tablet sales fell 8.6 percent in the third quarter of 2018, making it the 16th quarter in a row for revenue decreases. In all, manufacturers shipped 36.4 million of the devices. Apple led the way in market share with 26.6 percent of the market, but it experienced a 6.1 percent year-over-year decline in sales.
“The tablet market is more like the traditional PC market than ever before,” IDC senior research analyst Jitesh Ubrani said in a statement. “Not only do these markets move in sync with each other, but the decreasing margins and overall decline, particularly in slate tablets, has led to the top five companies capturing a larger share as many small vendors have exited the space or simply treat the tablet market with a much lower priority.”
