Tiobe has updated its index of programming language popularity for October. This month, Python, which had surged into third place last month, dropped back down to fourth position. However, that is still an improvement over last year when it was in fifth.

Swift, which is used for mobile development, is in 10th place, up from 16th last year. “Swift is clearly the number one programming language to develop mobile apps for iOS. But since it is only available for iOS and not for Android, you see developers move to ‘write once deploy everywhere’ frameworks instead,” TIOBE said.

The top ten on the Tiobe list were Java (17.801), C (15.376), C++ (7.593), Python (7.156), Visual Basic .NET (5.884), C# (3.485), PHP (2.794), JavaScript (2.280), SQL (2.038), and Swift (1.500).
