A new survey conducted by Google and Gallup found that while 91 percent of American parents want their kids to learn computer science, less than 9 percent of K-12 principals believed demand was high, pointing to a potential lack of communication between parents and administrators. Principals also pointed to a variety of other reasons why their schools don’t offer computer science courses, including the following:
- We have to devote most of our time to other courses that are related to testing requirements, and computer science is not one of them. (47 percent)
- There is not enough money to train or hire a teacher. (44 percent)
- There are no teachers available at my school/in my district with the necessary skills to teach computer science. (42 percent)
- We do not have sufficient budget to purchase the necessary computer equipment. (34 percent)
- We do not have sufficient budget to purchase the necessary computer software. (33 percent)
