Super Mario Run Has Earned More Than $50 Million

Nintendo has revealed that its Super Mario Run has earned more than most analysts expected: about $53 million. The mobile game has been downloaded more than 78 million times, and more than 5 percent of users have paid $10 to unlock the entire game.

Analysts say the 5 percent pay rate is “pretty amazing” for a game that costs so much, but the company’s CEO said they weren’t satisfied because they had been aiming for a double-digit conversion rate. Within the mobile development industry, few free-to-download games achieve a 5 percent pay rate, even if the full content costs only a dollar or two.

Nintendo’s revenue was down overall, but profits more than doubled year-over-year, partly because of currency fluctuations.
