Study: New Mobile Developers Face Uphill Battle

Distimo has released a new report titled “The New Apps in the Crowd,” which highlights the difficulties involved in breaking into upper echelons of the mobile development industry. Of the top 250 apps in Google Play, only three percent were from previously unknown publishers, and in the App Store, only two percent of the top 250 were from newcomers. According to Distimo, “These new publishers represent an even smaller part of the revenue, and show that it really is a tight market.”

However, apps released for the U.S. market have a slightly better chance of cracking through to the big leagues. New publishers accounted for 17 percent of the top 300 iPhone apps within the U.S. and 12 percent of the top 300 Google Play apps in the U.S.
