A South Korean prosecutor is seeking a warrant for the arrest of Lee Jae-yong, a Samsung family member who is nominally the vice chairman of Samsung Electronics but in practice runs the corporation. Officials say that Lee ordered other Samsung executives to pay bribes to Choi Soon-sil, a friend of South Korean President Park Geun-hye. Several other Samsung executives are also facing investigation. Park is currently facing impeachment on bribery and corruption charges she denies. Samsung also refuted the allegations, saying it “did not make contributions in order to receive favors.”
Samsung is still recovering from another scandal, the recall of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones. A new report says the company has completed its investigation into why the smartphones caught fire and that it plans to place the blame on the device’s battery.
Both scandals could affect the mobile development industry as Samsung is the leading manufacturer of Android smartphones.
