Samsung has announced plans to buy San Francisco based cloud computing provider Joyent for an undisclosed sum. Joyent is known for its support of Node.js, as well as its Triton containers as a service offering and its Manta cloud storage.
Samsung said that it will integrate Joyent into its mobile division. However, Joyent will keep its current management and its brand name, and Samsung plans to let the business unit operate largely independently.
Injong Rhee, chief technology officer of Samsung’s mobile division, indicated that the acquisition may be part of a shift in Samsung’s strategy. “We’ve traditionally been more focused on hardware, but you’re going to see more focus on software and services,” he said.
