Ruby, Assembly, Groovy, Python Make Popularity Gains

The latest update to the Tiobe index of programming language popularity includes a few surprises. For example, Ruby, which had fallen to 18th a year ago, has climbed back up to tenth on the list, which Tiobe notes is the same position it was in a decade ago. Perhaps related to the mobility and IoT trends, the Assembly language climbed from 28th in March 2015 to 12th in the latest index. And Groovy climbed from 36th to 17th over the past year.

Less surprising are the facts that Python climbed from eighth to fifth, Swift rose from 23rd to 14th, and R went from 20th to 16th.

The top ten on the chart are Java (20.528), C (14.600), C++ (6.721), C# (4.271), Python (4.257), PHP (2.768), Visual Basic .NET (2.561), JavaScript (2.333), Perl (2.251) and Ruby (2.238).
