Romanian Developers Earn Five Times as Much as Average Workers

Demand and salaries for software engineers are high around the world, and developers in Romania are doing particularly well. IT professionals in the country earn about five times as much as the average local salary. According to recruitment agency Brainspotting, senior software developers in Romania make about €24,000, or about $30,000. But thanks to low expenses, that affords them a very good lifestyle. “A software developer in Cluj with seven years’ experience earns an average of €1,700 a month,” said Tudor Constantin, a Romanian developer. “I’ve calculated using numbeo that in order to afford the same kind of life, I’d have to make about €8,000 in New York.”

Recruiters say tech job postings in Romania are up 35 percent in 2014 compared to the previous year. Developers say they regularly receive job offers; in fact, 35 percent have never had to apply for a job. Highly sought skills include Java, .NET and PHP coding abilities. Developer Adrian Punga summed up the situation, saying, “Life is pretty good here for IT people. Better than in most other countries.”
