Until now, owners of RIM’s PlayBook tablet have been able to augment the relatively meager catalog of apps in the BlackBerry App World by sideloading Android apps onto their devices. However, RIM has announced that it will drop sideloading support in its next update for the tablet in order to combat piracy.
“We’re removing sideloading for consumers,” said RIM’s Alec Saunders. “Piracy is a huge problem for Android devs, and we don’t want to duplicate the chaotic cesspool of Android Market [now Google Play].”
