The people behind the App Developer Conference have published a survey of event attendees, and it highlights difficulties faced by the mobile development industry. When asked how much revenue their latest app earned, 40 percent said $0. And another 11 percent made less than $1,000 off their most recent app.

The poll also called attention to the prevalence of free apps. None of the developers surveyed were working on paid apps. To generate revenue, 49 percent relied on in-app purchases, 40 percent used some advertising, and 33 percent of developers were paid to create apps by a third party.
