Citing sources at Canonical and Microsoft, ZDNet is reporting that users will soon be able to run Canonical’s Ubuntu Linux operating system alongside Microsoft Windows. In the past, users have been able to use both operating systems in separate virtual machines, but the report says that the ability to run Ubuntu will be integrated directly into Windows. Microsoft is expected to make the announcement at its Build 2016 development conference, which kicks off today.

The focus of this new Ubuntu-on-Windows capability is said to be developers rather than end users. ZDNet speculates that the integration could make it easier for developers to write code that will run in Ubuntu on Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service.
