Report: Software Bug Led to Fatal Uber Accident

Based on interviews with two anonymous sources, The Information is reporting that the March Uber self-driving car accident that killed pedestrian Elaine Herzberg in Tempe, Arizona, resulted from a software bug. The car’s sensors reportedly detected Herzberg but classified her as a false positive, thus failing to brake or swerve around her.

The article highlights the difficulty developers face in creating self-driving cars that avoid pedestrians, bicyclists and road hazards without swerving and braking erratically.

Uber declined to comment on the report because the accident is still under investigation.
