Consultants with The Pfeiffer Report have released their “2013 App Store Maturity Shootout,” which compares Apple’s App Store, Google Play and Amazon’s Appstore. The firm ranked all three on search, discoverability, maturity and user experience friction. The App Store came out on top with a score of 53.1 out of 100, compared to a 40.9 for Google Play and a 34.1 for Amazon Appstore.
However, the report said that all three still have plenty of room for improvement when it comes to meeting the needs of the mobile development industry. “Current app stores do not fully reflect the breadth and richness of apps that are out there,” wrote the authors. “They work fine if all you are interested in is the next bestselling game. If, on the other hand, you are talking about a truly original app — one that will drive the platform forward if it gets widely used — (then) the chances of being discovered are slim.”
