Mobile discovery firm Adjust has released a new report on app “zombies,” apps which are very difficult to find because they never make it to the top of a category list. According to the report, the number of zombie apps has increased 10 percent since last year and now number more than a million.
The report encourages mobile development firms to pay more attention to marketing. “The days of the lone developer placing his creation into the world and watching it grab an audience by itself are definitely long gone, with a few wild (avian) exceptions,” the report says. “To stand a chance of ranking in the top 20 percent, developers are facing a reality where marketing and user acquisition are key components of the business.”
The game subcategories with the highest numbers of “zombies,” are arcade (89.1 percent), action (87.0 percent), puzzle (83.2 percent), adventure (83.2 percent) and family (79.0 percent).
