Report: More Dangerous Apps Come from the U.S. than from Any Other Country

A new report from Marble Security is challenging conventional wisdom on where malicious mobile apps originate. While many in the mobile development industry like to point the finger at unscrupulous developers in Russia or China, the report found that U.S. developers were behind 42 percent of apps that posed security or privacy risks, making it the leading country of origin for risky apps.

“It’s a common misconception that the risk of using mobile devices is limited to jailbroken or rooted devices in Asia, and apps that are downloaded from fly-by-night app stores other than the Apple App Store or Google Play,” said the report. However, this study found many insecure apps in the two largest app stores, and those apps could run on phones that hadn’t been jailbroken or rooted.
