Citing “people familiar with its plans,” the Financial Times is reporting that Google is working on a new virtual reality (VR) headset that will be a successor to Cardboard. The new device is said to be similar to Gear VR, which is a joint effort from Samsung and Oculus.
Google is expected to release the new device and related Android technology later this year. The device will require users to have a smartphone that will power the VR headset, and Google is said to be building some VR capabilities directly into Android.
Google did not comment on the report.
