Last week, the European Union slapped Google with a record-breaking $5 billion fine for using Android to dominate the mobile development industry and thwart competition. Now, a new report in Bloomberg says that Google attempted to settle the matter months earlier. But EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said that Google waited too long to broach the subject of settlement, which led to the fine.
Anonymous sources said that in the fall of last year Google offered to alter its Android contracts, but it didn’t receive a response form the EU. Later, the company heard by phone that settlement was no longer an option.
