Report Finds High Revenue Potential for In-App Video Ads

A new report from development tool vendor Unity Technologies finds that the mobile development industry could generate significant revenue from in-app video ads. Its survey found that 71 percent of gamers say that watching video ads is their preferred way to “pay” for content. More than three quarters of mobile gamers (78 percent) said they would be willing to watch video ads in exchange for some sort of in-game reward, and 62 percent said they already do so already.

In addition, more than half of developers (52 percent) said video ads provide more revenue than any other type of in-game advertising, and 62 percent of mobile development firms that added rewarded video ads experienced a benefit in their retention rates.

“Rewarded video ads are a key monetization and engagement method quickly growing in popularity with today’s mobile game developer community,” said Jarkko Rajamaki, Unity Technologies’ director of ads. “When properly integrated into gameplay, video ads, especially rewarded video ads, have a positive impact on the player’s experience and can help developers monetize their games and increase player engagement.”
