A new report from Gartner finds that while worldwide shipments of traditional devices, including PCs, tablets and smartphones, will remain flat at 2.3 billion this year, newer kinds of devices will likely see increasing sales. Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner, pointed out that many of these new devices are controlled through voice interfaces. “We’ve seen that, over the last couple of years, people using voice capabilities more and more,” he said. “The trend here is really about how users are looking for different ways of interacting with their devices. And then providing a better experience.”
For mobile development pros, devices like head mounted displays (HMDs), and virtual personal assistant (VPA) speakers and wearables could prove to be the next big way of consuming apps. But users will likely be accessing these new apps through voice commands rather than traditional displays.
