In most industries, women don’t earn as much as their male colleagues who do the same work. However, a new study by the American Association of University Women found that isn’t true in the technology industry. Although there are far more male than female developers, the women do enjoy equal pay.

Some say things are improving for female coders in other ways as well. Evonne Heyning, cofounder of EDDEFY, says there is a “rising tide of women, not just in engineering and coding, but across technology.” She adds, “When I was growing up, I didn’t have women to look up to or talk to in technology. I never met female programmers until I went to college, but I started programming when I was six. We’re not seeing the full tide rise now, but it’s changing. When I go to hackathons, it’s definitely different than it was four years ago. In general, hackathons can be very cliqueish, but I see more women now.”
