A new survey from VisionMobile finds that there are still more developers targeting the desktop than the cloud, mobile devices or the Internet of Things (IoT). According to the Developer Economics: State of Developer Nation Q1 2016 report, 50 percent of developers write for the desktop, 45 percent for cloud and backend services, 42 percent for mobile devices and 19 percent for IoT. “Mobile, IoT and cloud, might get more media attention and newspaper headlines, but the humble desktop is where computer users still spend most of their working lives, so it shouldn’t be surprising that so many professional developers are involved in creating desktop applications,” the report said.
When it comes to revenue, cloud developers make the most, with 32 percent of them generating $25,000 or more per month. Desktop developers were second on the earnings list, followed by mobile and IoT, in that order. Interestingly, the report claims that 65 percent of IoT developers generate less than $500 in revenue per month, and 52 percent of mobile developers say the same.
