Will Strafach, a security researcher and CEO of Sudo Security Group, has discovered that Uber’s iOS app could take screenshots of iPhone users’ screens, even if the app was only running in the background. And in news that shocked the mobile development industry and iPhone owners, Apple knew and approved of the screen recording entitlement.

“It looks like no other third-party developer has been able to get Apple to grant them a private sensitive entitlement of this nature,” Strafach said. “Considering Uber’s past privacy issues I am very curious how they convinced Apple to allow this.”

In response, Uber said that it only used the screen recording ability to improve the performance of its Apple Watch app. It added that it is no longer using the code and will remove it from its app.
