A new report from App Annie finds that while Google Play has 90 percent more downloads than the iOS App Store, the App Store brings in 80 percent more revenue for the mobile development industry.
The report authors say that much of this discrepancy is due to the fact that Google Play is banned in China while the App Store is not. Also, Google Play is very popular in countries where downloads are high but app revenue is not.
For Google Play, the top countries by downloads are the United States, Brazil, India, Russia and Mexico (in that order); for the App Store the top five include China, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Russia (in that order). On the revenue side, Google Play’s top countries, in order, are Japan, the United States, South Korea, Taiwan and Germany, while the App Store’s are the United States, Japan, China, the United Kingdom and Australia.
