SPICE stands for Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environment. ZDNet.com’s Dana Blankenhorn writes that this desktop virtualization protocol is similar to Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Protocol or Critix’ Independent Computing Architecture, but thanks to Red Hat, SPICE is now open source.
Red Hat acquired SPICE when it purchased Qumranet back in 2008, according to Blankenhorn.
“While it’s currently limited to working with KVM, someone could now write a version for Xen, and it could become a component in other folks’ stuff. Again, good for Red Hat,” writes Blankenhorn.
