Tiobe, the company behind the well-known programming popularity index, has announced that R and Swift are candidates for this year’s “language of the year” title. The designation is given to the language with the biggest popularity increase during the year. R climbed 1.38 percent in popularity, while Swift, which debuted this year, has a 1.06 percent share. The company said that JavaScript and Dart also have an outside chance to win the award.

The languages that have lost the most popularity this year include three languages from near the top of the index: PHP (-2.53 percent), Java (-2.35 percent) and C++ (-2.16 percent).

This month’s top ten languages are C, Java, Objective-C, C++, C#, PHP, JavaScript, Python, VisualBasic .NET and Perl, in that order.
