Tiobe has updated its monthly index of the most popular programming languages, and Java has slipped slightly. It remains the most popular language on the index, but Tiobe said it “clearly has some struggles” ahead if it is to continue to grow.
As a bright spot in the rankings, Tiobe singled out Python. Paul Jansen, managing director of Tiobe, said, “Python seems set to become the eventual winner of the battle between dynamic languages Perl, Ruby, PHP, and Python.” He added that Python “is everywhere nowadays. Both Java and Python are the primary languages in which students learn to code. It is indeed about ease of use and ease [for Python].” Python was fifth on the Tiobe list and second on the alternative Pypl Popularity of Programming Languages index.
The top five on the Tiobe list included Java (21.145 percent rating), C (15.594 percent), C++ (6.907 percent), C# (4.4 percent) and Python (4.18 percent).
