In a recent survey of over 400 software developers conducted by Evans Data Corp., 61% of the respondents reported that some of their IT resources will move to the public cloud this year. Over 87% plan to move only half, or less than half, of their resources. In other words, most plan to adopt a hybrid cloud model.

Other highlights of the survey results include:

  • Over 55% of developers cited MySQL as their preferred database for use in the public cloud.
  • 64% plan to make their cloud apps available to mobile devices.
  • The preferred hypervisor vendor for use in a virtualized private cloud is VMWare (28%), followed by Microsoft and IBM.

Janel Garvin, CEO of Evans Data, said, “The hybrid Cloud presents a very reasonable model, which is easy to assimilate and provides a gateway to Cloud computing without the need to commit all resources or surrender all control and security to an outside vendor. Security and government compliance are primary obstacles to public Cloud adoption, but a hybrid model allows for selective implementation so these barriers can be avoided.”
