Oracle Wants to Give Java EE to a Foundation

Oracle has released a statement indicating that it might be willing to move oversight of Java EE to another organization. “We believe that moving Java EE technologies to an open source foundation may be the right next step, to adopt more agile processes, implement more flexible licensing and change the governance process,” the company said in a statement.

James Gosling, often called the “father of Java,” has argued in favor of such a move in the past, going so far as to offer T-shirts with slogans like “Hold Oracle to Their Pledge!” and “It’s Time to Set Java Free.” Red Hat issued a statement in support of Oracle’s overtures, and the Eclipse Foundation did the same. Eclipse Executive Director Mike Milinkovich added, “If asked to so, the Eclipse Foundation would be pleased to serve as the host organization.”
