This week, Oracle released version 8.0 of its NetBeans integrated development environment (IDE). Most notably, NetBeans 8.0 supports Java 8.0 and includes tools for updating older Java code with features available in the latest version of the language, such as Lambda Expressions, Compact Profiles, Streams and Method References. Other key new features include better support for HTML5, Karma and Grunt integration, Chrome Web tools integration and support for embedded Java development.

According to James Gosling, the father of Java, NetBeans 8.0 is “a landmark release.” He added, “There is a long list of useful features [in this release], but the two that have made the biggest difference to me have been the support for Lambda Expressions for embedded development. It’s absolutely magical how the ‘Use Lambda Expression’ refactoring makes my code so much clearer.”
