As planned, OpenIndiana launched this week.
OpenIndiana hopes to carry on the OpenSolaris open source project legacy now that Oracle has walked away.
“OpenIndiana is a continuation of the OpenSolaris legacy and aims to be binary and package compatible with Oracle Solaris 11 and Solaris 11 Express,” the press release said. “Our first build is from our development branch suitable for testing. We are also working on a stable branch, will receive regular security and bug updates making it suitable for use in production completely free of charge.”
OpenIndiana is available now for immediate download. It’s part of the Illumos Foundation and is a drop-in replacement for OpenSolaris.
