Matt Asay is the new chief operating office for Canonical Ltd., the commercial sponsor for open source Ubuntu.
Asay will be “responsible for aligning strategic goals and operational activities, the optimization of day-to-day operations, and leadership of Canonical marketing and back-office functions,” according to the press statement.
He’s been involved in the open source community since 1998. Most recently, Asay was the vice president of business development for Alfresco and author of the C|Net blog The Open Road. Now his focus will be on making Ubuntu more than just another Linux distro.
“As more companies and people are embracing Ubuntu for their day-to-day computing, we felt it critical to bring in a person who knew not just open source, but has a long experience in making Linux relevant to businesses and users alike,” said Jane Silber, current COO and upcoming CEO, Canonical. “We think Matt brings to Canonical the perfect blend of industry, executive and community savvy.”
Ubuntu is an African word meaning “Humanity to others,” or “I am what I am because of who we all are.”
