Boxee developers have announced the public beta of their cross-platform open media center.

Previously only available as a closed beta, Boxee is a fork of the XBMC Media Center with some extras like Web 2.0 social networking. Boxee integrates with Twitter, Tumbr, Digg YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, Comedy Central and the list goes on.

According to the story on The H, compared to the previous alpha release, “the Boxee public beta features an updated user interface and a number of behind-the-scenes changes to the XMBC Media Center software.”

Boxee isn’t entirely open source. Parts of Boxee are released under the GNU Public License and other parts are closed source. Rather than using OpenGL, the Windows version uses Microsoft’s DirectX.

Boxee is available for Windows, Mac OS X(Intel Only) and Linux (Ubuntu).
