Objective C Wins TIOBE’s Programming Language of the Year Award

According to TIOBE, Objective C gained the most market share of any programming language this year, earning it the company’s Programming Language of the Year award. The language climbed from just over 3 percent market share in January 2011 to nearly 7 percent market share in January 2012. It started 2012 as the fifth most popular programming language on the TIOBE index.

Java retained its top slot on the chart with 17.5 percent market share, although it slipped slightly from December. C was second with 17 percent market share, followed by C#, which climbed up from sixth place last month. The entire top ten included the following:

  2. C
  3. C#
  4. C++
  5. Objective-C
  6. PHP
  7. (Visual) Basic
  8. Python
  9. Perl
  10. JavaScript
