Objective-C Receives Top Programming Language Award (Again)

For the second year in a row, the TIOBE Index, which measures the popularity of programming languages, has awarded Objective-C its top Programming Language Award. During the year, the mobile development language gained 3.37 percent in market share by TIOBE’s reckoning. By contrast, TIOBE says that C#, another mobile language, declined 2.57 percent.

For the coming year, “It is expected that Java (Android) and C++/C# (Windows Mobile) will regain popularity,” TIOBE said. “Objective-C seems to be at its top, especially because this language is hardly used for anything else.”

However, not everyone agrees with TIOBE’s assessment. The competing PYPL PopularitY of Programming Language index said that C# popularity rose 2.3 percent during the year, making it the top language for 2012.
