The latest version of the open source Cassandra distributed database is able to store 2 billion columns per row.

According to Cassandra developers, the ability to hold such wide rows of data could be useful to big data computing projects, Joab Jackson of IDG News reported.

The Large Row Support feature was added in Cassandra version 0.7. While there was no previous upper limit set in previous versions of Cassandra, the maximum amount of material a single row of data could hold was approximately 2GB, Jackson said. That limit has been eliminated.
