On Friday, Netflix vice president Kevin McEntee wrote about the company’s commitment to using and contributing to open source projects.
“We do utilize some commercial software,” McEntee said, “but there is often the alternative choice of utilizing open source software, preferably open source software that implements an open standard.”
Some of the projects Netflix uses and contributes to are Hudson, Hadoop, Hive, Honu, Apache, Tomcat, Ant and Ivy.
It’s worth noting that Netflix’s streaming video service does not run natively on Linux. You have to use VirtualBox, or some other virtualization solution to watch streaming video from Netflix because it uses Microsoft’s Silverlight.
