Netflix currently uses Silverlight for its on-demand video service, but not for long. Like many other companies, Netflix has announced support for HTML5.
Because Microsoft is abandoning support for Silverlight in 2016 and because browser plug-ins are problematic, “we need to find a replacement,” blogged Netflix. To that end it has been experimenting with HTML5 extensions in Chrome, specifically, Media Source Extensions, Encrypted Media Extensions and the Web Cryptography API. The company plans to start testing its HTML5 video player on Windows and OS X as soon as WebCrypto becomes available in the Chrome browser.
